Here are some of the highlights of the reaction to yesterday’s debate:

SeattlePI:  McGinn impresssive in debate; Mallahan needs to do more

“McGinn is, increasingly, a known — and impressive — quantity.”

The Stranger: McGinn Wins First Mayoral Debate, Calls for Vote on Tunnel

“Mallahan came off as snarky and under-informed.”

“McGinn demonstrated a high level of affability,” said Gary Strannigan, regional director of public affairs for Safeco Insurance who gave the welcoming address, walking down Fourth Avenue afterward. Although Strannigan doesn’t live in Seattle, he says, “Before today, I would have voted for Mallahan because of his business experience. But I have to say I was impressed with McGinn’s skill. He did a nice job from a public standpoint, and he was more knowledgeable.”

PubliCola:  Mallahan ill-informed

My (short) take: The debate, which focused on how the next mayor will make the city a business-friendly environment, was pretty lackluster. McGinn came across as well-informed but far to the left of the business-leader-heavy crowd, and Mallahan came across as business-friendly but ill-informed about issues surrounding development such as community benefits districts and incentive zoning.

Crosscut:  McGinn articulate and a good speaker, especially at laying out his vision

“Since the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce crowd is a pro-business group, one might have expected Mallahan to have had home field advantage. Here’s an exec that can talk the talk of business. My impression, however, was that McGinn held his own by his ability to frame issues and set up their context extremely well. He’s articulate and a good speaker, especially at laying out his vision.”
